Spinal Cord Injuries
Spinal cord injuries result when there has been trauma to the spine that causes damage to the spinal cord itself or interferes with the nerve tracts that send signals through the spine.
Spinal cord injuries may be caused by automobile accidents, falls, electric shock, diving accidents, sports injuries, workplace accidents, extreme twisting of the truck, bullet wounds or stab wounds.
There are many different types of spinal cord injuries that may result from trauma. A contusion of the spinal cord is caused when the spinal cord is bruised. Compression is caused by pressure on the spinal cord. These are the two most common spinal cord injuries. Central cord syndrome results in damage to certain regions of the spinal cord. Also, one may suffer from lacerations to the spine which sever or tear nerve fibers.
More serious injuries to the spine may cause paralysis. People with spinal cord injuries may suffer from loss of sensation and function below the point of the injury. They may lose their ability to breathe on their own or control the function of their bladders and bowels. Sexual dysfunction may also develop as a result of a spinal cord injury. Pain, bed sores, bladder infections, and lung infections could also develop secondary to the spine injury.
