Cerebral Palsy / Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy

According to a recent article in Pediatrics, The Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics:
"Hypoxic-ischemic cerebral injury that occurs during the perinatal period is one of the most commonly recognized causes of severe, long-term neurologic deficits in children; it is often referred to as cerebral palsy."Or, in layman's terms: "Brain injury that occurs during birth is a common cause of cerebral palsy." Sometimes, such a brain injury is preventable.

One mechanism used to detect fetal distress is the fetal heart monitor.

The fetal heart monitor records and traces the pattern of the mother's contractions in relation to the baby's heart rate. These patterns provide evidence about the baby's condition to the nurses and doctors caring for a laboring mother. Some of these patterns show that the baby is in distress, which demands response from the medical team. A reasonable response may include simply turning the mother to one side or the other, administration of oxygen to the mother, or in severe cases, an emergency Cesarean section may be performed.
When health care providers fail to act reasonably, they can be help responsible for the damage that occurs as a result of their failure to act. If your child suffers from Cerebral Palsy, it may be due to the medical team's failure to respond in a reasonable manner. We have contacts with some of the most respected doctors and nurses in the United States. We will obtain copies of your medical records and have them thoroughly reviewed by a qualified expert to determine if your child's disability is the result of negligence.
We have handled dozens of cases involving children with cerebral palsy. We understand the devastating affect it can have on a family. We also understand that positive results can provide comfort and new hope for children who suffer from these problems.
